Area Coordinator & Camp Director

 

Galileo is looking for a visionary people and project manager to join our SoCal Field Operations team. The Area Coordinator position is a unique, full-time role that combines year-round, behind-the-scenes magic with the excitement of leading your own summer camp program.

What’s the team like?

 

The Area Coordinator will join our dynamic and tight-knit Field Operations team full of master multi-taskers, mentors, educators, and get-things-done-like-no-one’s-business go-getters. Working closely with all departments within our organization, the Field Ops team strategizes, plans, and executes all aspects of delivering our camp programs. 

 

What’s the job, really?

A nine month administrative and leadership opportunity from January-September, with potential to extend to a year-round role.

 

  • Attend weekly check-ins with your manager and bi-weekly staff meetings

 

  • Complete trimester performance evaluations with your manager

 

Trimester 1: (January-May): Likely weekly hours: 40-50 not including weekend trainings/retreats

 

  • Attend weekend-long training in January

 

  • Review and execute on workplan tasks, including self-study training modules and reading

 

  • Help generate enrollment and staffing at your camp through various marketing and/or staff recruiting activities. Activities and hours vary by site, and may include attending events, sending emails, calling families, or other community efforts.

 

  • Attend a Saturday Staff Selection & Hiring Training day in February (first-year Camp Directors only)

 

  • With the Galileo People Operations team, hire top-notch staff through:
    • Local travel as the face and voice of Galileo’s employer brand at various recruiting events in Southern California, including career fairs and workshop facilitation
    • Driving retention of previous staffers
    • Interviewing candidates both in-person and via Skype
    • Extending employment offers

 

  • Attend overnight Staff Management & Operations training retreat in early April

 

  • Participate and help organize 1-3 Camp Director/Region get-togethers

 

  • With the Galileo Marketing team:
    • Attend and lead marketing events, representing Galileo in the communities we serve
    • Manage materials, plans and communication to support marketing efforts
    • Represent Galileo in one on one conversations and through public speaking opportunities

 

  • Support other Camp Directors in region and in company. Activities may include:
    • Training new CDs on specific topics
    • Leading sessions at CD retreats
    • Acting as a mentor to specific CDs and supporting CDs with camper and staff retention
    • Updating Vincenzo and other training materials
    • Potentially managing one or more CDs

 

  • Attend overnight Staff Management & Operations training retreat in early April

 

  • Help develop and facilitate online training content

 

Trimester 2: (June-September): Camps run for 5-8 weeks, starting as early as early June and ending as late as mid-August, depending on location. Likely weekly hours during camp: 55-60+

 

  • Work full-time preparing for camp the week before camp begins, often at your camp location

 

  • Work on-site and full-time, Monday-Friday for 5-8 weeks (depending on the duration of your camp; likely 55-65 weekly hours during camp)

 

  • Run daily operations of camp, creating a high energy, fun and creative experience for campers (includes leading skits, cheers/songs, opening & closing ceremonies, all camp games, and other fun camp traditions)

 

  • Lead and manage staff, ensuring quality instruction, high energy, and overall performance

 

  • Communicate daily with parents

 

  • Manage costs, including supplies and staffing

 

  • Develop relationships with facility partners and ensure facility is well maintained and left in excellent condition

 

  • Communicate daily with manager (Area Director)

 

  • Participate in 2-3 regional get-togethers over the summer

 

  • Attend Camp Director debrief and celebration dinner in early August

 

What are we looking for?

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience

 

  • Experience working with K-8th grade children, and demonstrated leadership experience

 

  • Excellent computer, and written and verbal communication skills

 

  • Staff selection and management experience a plus

 

  • Readiness to stick around: we find that our team members benefit from a 3 year minimum commitment in the Camp Director role
